Six pairs sit directly opposite each other on the twelve-year cycle: Rat-Horse, Ox-Goat, Tiger-Monkey, Rabbit-Rooster, Dragon-Dog, Snake-Pig. Tradition calls these a clash. That doesn't mean doomed. It means the two approach things from very different angles, and need more conscious effort.
How this differs from Western compatibility
Western sun-sign compatibility is built from element (fire, earth, air, water) and modality (cardinal, fixed, mutable). Chinese zodiac compatibility ignores both. It works purely from each animal's fixed spot in the twelve-year cycle. So the two systems can give different-feeling answers for the same two people.
