Chinese Zodiac Compatibility: Which Animals Actually Get Along?

Chinese zodiac compatibility uses a completely different system from Western sun-sign compatibility: a fixed set of "trine" groups that get along well, and specific opposing pairs traditionally described as a clash, based on the twelve animals' positions around the cycle.

The four trines: natural allies

The twelve animals split into four trine groups of three, traditionally described as sharing values and getting along easily: Rat-Dragon-Monkey (ambitious, resourceful), Ox-Snake-Rooster (steady, precise), Tiger-Horse-Dog (independent, loyal), and Rabbit-Goat-Pig (gentle, artistic). Two animals from the same trine are considered a naturally smooth match.

The six clashing pairs

Animals sitting directly opposite each other on the twelve-year cycle (Rat-Horse, Ox-Goat, Tiger-Monkey, Rabbit-Rooster, Dragon-Dog, Snake-Pig) are traditionally described as a clash, not doomed, but requiring more conscious effort since the two approach things from fundamentally different angles.

How this differs from Western compatibility

Western sun-sign compatibility is built from element (fire, earth, air, water) and modality (cardinal, fixed, mutable). Chinese zodiac compatibility ignores both of those entirely and works purely from each animal's fixed position in the twelve-year cycle, so the two systems can give different-feeling answers for the same two people.

Using both systems together

Since they're built on entirely different logic, many people check both their Western sun-sign match and their Chinese zodiac match as separate, complementary lenses rather than expecting them to agree.
