About Apara Ekadashi
Apara means "boundless". It is traditionally said to bring limitless merit, and in some regions it is observed as Achala Ekadashi. It is associated with humility and the end of old burdens.
How it is observed
- Grains (rice, wheat, pulses) and beans are traditionally avoided; fruit, milk, nuts, sabudana and kuttu are common.
- Many avoid onion, garlic, meat and alcohol, and keep the day for prayer, japa and reading scripture.
- The fast is broken the next morning (Parana) within the Parana window, after sunrise and before Dwadashi ends.
- If you cannot fast fully, a simple fruit-and-milk day or a sincere partial fast is widely accepted. Elders, children, the unwell and pregnant women are traditionally excused from strict fasting.
