About Kamada Ekadashi
Kamada, "the fulfiller of desires", is the first Ekadashi of the Hindu year. Devotees fast and worship Lord Vishnu hoping for the fulfilment of sincere wishes and for freedom from the weight of old faults.
How it is observed
- Grains (rice, wheat, pulses) and beans are traditionally avoided; fruit, milk, nuts, sabudana and kuttu are common.
- Many avoid onion, garlic, meat and alcohol, and keep the day for prayer, japa and reading scripture.
- The fast is broken the next morning (Parana) within the Parana window, after sunrise and before Dwadashi ends.
- If you cannot fast fully, a simple fruit-and-milk day or a sincere partial fast is widely accepted. Elders, children, the unwell and pregnant women are traditionally excused from strict fasting.
Traditional observance and faith, not a guarantee or advice. Follow your own family or temple custom where it differs.
