About Chhath Puja (Sandhya Arghya)
Chhath Puja is a four-day Sun-god festival; the main day, Sandhya Arghya, is on Kartik Shukla Shashthi when arghya is offered to the setting Sun, followed by the Usha Arghya at sunrise on Saptami.
It is observed mainly in Bihar, Jharkhand, eastern Uttar Pradesh and Nepal, with a strict 36-hour waterless fast.
How it is observed
- Nahay-Khay and Kharna in the first two days.
- Standing in water to offer arghya to the setting Sun on the main day.
- Offering thekua, fruit and sugarcane in bamboo soop.
- Usha Arghya at sunrise the next morning to end the fast.
