About Hartalika Teej
Hartalika Teej falls on Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya, a day before Ganesh Chaturthi. It commemorates Parvati's penance to win Shiva as her husband; the name refers to her friends who "carried her away" (harit) into the forest.
Women keep a strict, often waterless fast, worship clay idols of Shiva and Parvati and stay awake through the night.
How it is observed
- Nirjala fast from sunrise to the next morning.
- Shiva-Parvati puja with sand or clay idols.
- Night-long jagran with bhajans.
- Offering sixteen items of shringar to the goddess.
