About Maha Shivaratri
Maha Shivaratri is the night of Magha Krishna Chaturdashi (Phalguna in the purnimanta calendar) when devotees honour Shiva, fast and keep a night-long vigil. The date is the one on which Chaturdashi prevails at midnight (Nishita Kaal).
Abhishek of the Shivalinga with milk, water, honey and bel leaves is done through the four prahars of the night.
