About Naraka Chaturdashi (Choti Diwali)
Naraka Chaturdashi (Choti Diwali, Kali Chaudas, Roop Chaudas) is the day before Diwali, on Krishna Chaturdashi. It remembers Krishna and Satyabhama's victory over the demon Naraka, and many take an early Abhyang Snan with oil and ubtan.
Lamps are lit in the evening and Kali or Hanuman is worshipped in several regions.
How it is observed
- Abhyang Snan (oil bath) before sunrise.
- Lighting diyas in the evening.
- Kali Chaudas and Hanuman puja in some regions.
- Preparing sweets and rangoli for Diwali.
Dates follow the Hindu lunar calendar (tithi) as seen from Delhi and can differ by a day between regions and panchangs. Computed from NASA JPL DE421 Sun and Moon positions. Confirm with your local temple or priest for religious observances.
