About Ahoi Ashtami
Ahoi Ashtami is observed on the Ashtami of the dark half of Ashwin (amanta), four days before Diwali. Mothers fast for the wellbeing of their sons and daughters and break the fast after seeing the stars (or the moon in some families).
A picture of Ahoi Mata with a cub (syau) is worshipped along with the katha.
How it is observed
- Fasting from sunrise until the stars appear.
- Ahoi Mata puja at dusk with the katha.
- Offering arghya to the stars.
- Giving sweets and gifts to children.
Dates follow the Hindu lunar calendar (tithi) as seen from Delhi and can differ by a day between regions and panchangs. Computed from NASA JPL DE421 Sun and Moon positions. Confirm with your local temple or priest for religious observances.
