Dhanteras 2026: What to Buy, What to Avoid and Puja Time

Dhanteras (Dhantrayodashi) is on Friday 6 November 2026, the first day of Diwali. It is linked with Lakshmi, Kubera and Dhanvantari, the divine physician, so the day is about wealth and health. People buy something new and make in the evening a short puja. This guide covers what to buy, what to avoid, and when.

What to buy on Dhanteras

Gold and silver coins, jewellery or bars are the classic purchase, because metals are considered lucky. Brass, copper and steel utensils are popular and affordable. A new broom (jhadu) is bought by many families as a symbol of removing misfortune. Other choices include a small silver Lakshmi-Ganesha idol, coriander seeds (dhaniya), a vehicle, electronics or a house or land purchase for those planning one.

What to avoid

By tradition, avoid buying iron or sharp objects such as knives, and avoid black items and glass. Avoid lending money or gold, and avoid spending impulsively beyond your budget. Do not buy on credit you cannot repay; buying a small item that fits your budget is enough.

When to buy and do the puja

Simple Dhanteras puja

Clean the house, place the new items on a cloth, light a lamp, and worship Lakshmi, Kubera and Dhanvantari with flowers, sweets and a few coins. In the evening, light a lamp for Yama (Yama Deepam) facing south at the entrance.

Is it necessary to buy gold?

No. The tradition is about welcoming prosperity, not spending beyond your means. A small utensil, a coin or even a broom counts.
