Diwali Lakshmi Puja Vidhi at Home: Step by Step with Samagri List (2026)

Diwali is on Sunday 8 November 2026. The main event is the evening Lakshmi-Ganesh puja on the Amavasya, done in Pradosh Kaal, the window that begins at sunset. This guide gives a simple, complete home vidhi with the samagri (items) list, in order, so you can do it without a priest if you wish.

Muhurat: when to do the puja

Do the puja in Pradosh Kaal, which starts at local sunset and lasts about 2 hours 24 minutes. In Delhi that is about 5:31 PM to 7:55 PM. Sunset is different in every city, so use the Diwali puja time for your city. Many families aim to start within the window and, if possible, in the Sthir Lagna (Vrishabha), but the Pradosh window is the main guide.

Samagri list

A picture or idol of Lakshmi and Ganesha (and Kubera if you keep one), a clean red or yellow cloth, a kalash with water, mango leaves and a coconut, roli, kumkum, turmeric, rice (akshat), flowers (lotus if possible), incense, ghee and oil lamps, camphor, betel leaves and nut, fruits, sweets, coins or notes, and the account books or laptop for business owners.

• Clean the house and puja area beforehand
• Draw a small rangoli at the entrance
• Light diyas in every room and at the door

Step by step

1. Bathe, wear clean clothes and sit facing east or north. 2. Spread the cloth, place Lakshmi to the right of Ganesha, and set the kalash. 3. Light the lamp and do achaman (sipping water three times) and a short sankalp stating your name and the intention. 4. Worship Ganesha first with roli, rice and flowers. 5. Invoke Lakshmi, offer flowers, water, sweets and fruit, and chant her mantra. 6. Offer coins or notes and place them in your safe or cash box. 7. Do the aarti with a lamp, and share the prasad. 8. Light diyas around the house and at the entrance.

Mantras

A simple Lakshmi mantra is “Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah”, chanted 108 times. For Ganesha, “Om Gan Ganapataye Namah”. The Lakshmi aarti “Om Jai Lakshmi Mata” is sung at the end.

For business owners: Chopda pujan

Traders and shopkeepers do Chopda (account book) puja: place new books, draw a swastika with kumkum, write “Shubh Labh”, and worship Lakshmi and Ganesha. Do it in the Pradosh window or your local muhurat.

After the puja

Keep the diyas lit for some time, offer prasad to family and neighbours, and avoid arguments and wasting food. Many people keep the lamp burning through the night. Follow safety rules with fireworks.
