Vedic vs Western Astrology: The Real Differences

Vedic vs Western astrology comes down to one core difference: if your Sun sign in an Indian chart differs from the one you know, you are seeing Vedic (sidereal) astrology measured against Western (tropical) astrology. Both are consistent systems with different starting points.

Vedic vs Western astrology: two different zodiacs

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, tied to the seasons. The Sun enters Aries at the March equinox. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, tied to the fixed stars. The Earth's axis slowly wobbles, called precession. Because of that, the two zodiacs have drifted apart by about 24 degrees. That gap is called the ayanamsa. That's why many people's Vedic sign is the one before their Western sign.

Different emphasis

Western astrology stresses the Sun sign, psychological growth and aspects between planets. Vedic astrology stresses the Moon sign, the nakshatras, the houses and time periods called dashas. Vedic tradition also has well-developed matching and timing methods, like Manglik checks and Sade Sati.

Houses and predictions

Vedic charts usually use whole-sign houses, where each sign is one house, and are read for timing with dashas. Western charts often use quadrant house systems and read timing with transits and progressions. Both can be personal and useful.

Which should you use?

Use whichever helps. Western astrology is a good fit for psychological insight and everyday horoscopes. Vedic astrology suits questions of timing, marriage and career, especially within Indian culture. SimplyAstro offers both: the birth chart calculator is Western and the Janam Kundli is Vedic.
