About Prabodhini Ekadashi
The "awakening" Ekadashi: Lord Vishnu wakes from his four-month sleep, ending Chaturmas. Weddings and other auspicious events resume, and Tulsi Vivah is celebrated around this time. It is one of the most widely observed Ekadashis.
How it is observed
- Grains (rice, wheat, pulses) and beans are traditionally avoided; fruit, milk, nuts, sabudana and kuttu are common.
- Many avoid onion, garlic, meat and alcohol, and keep the day for prayer, japa and reading scripture.
- The fast is broken the next morning (Parana) within the Parana window, after sunrise and before Dwadashi ends.
- If you cannot fast fully, a simple fruit-and-milk day or a sincere partial fast is widely accepted. Elders, children, the unwell and pregnant women are traditionally excused from strict fasting.
Traditional observance and faith, not a guarantee or advice. Follow your own family or temple custom where it differs.
