About Devshayani Ekadashi
On this day Lord Vishnu is said to begin his four-month cosmic sleep, the start of Chaturmas, when weddings and other auspicious events pause. It is the great pilgrimage day of Pandharpur, where lakhs walk the Wari to Vithoba.
How it is observed
- Grains (rice, wheat, pulses) and beans are traditionally avoided; fruit, milk, nuts, sabudana and kuttu are common.
- Many avoid onion, garlic, meat and alcohol, and keep the day for prayer, japa and reading scripture.
- The fast is broken the next morning (Parana) within the Parana window, after sunrise and before Dwadashi ends.
- If you cannot fast fully, a simple fruit-and-milk day or a sincere partial fast is widely accepted. Elders, children, the unwell and pregnant women are traditionally excused from strict fasting.
Traditional observance and faith, not a guarantee or advice. Follow your own family or temple custom where it differs.
