About Diwali (Lakshmi Puja)
Diwali (Deepavali) is the main day of the five-day festival, on the Amavasya of Ashwin (amanta). Lakshmi and Ganesha are worshipped in Pradosh Kaal after sunset, when the Amavasya prevails.
Homes are lit with diyas and rangoli, families share sweets and gifts and fireworks follow. For Jains it marks Mahavira's nirvana and for Sikhs it coincides with Bandi Chhor Divas.
How it is observed
- Lakshmi-Ganesha puja in Pradosh Kaal (also Sthir Lagna).
- Lighting rows of diyas and decorating with rangoli.
- Exchanging sweets and gifts.
- Chopda Pujan for businesses in Gujarat.
Dates follow the Hindu lunar calendar (tithi) as seen from Delhi and can differ by a day between regions and panchangs. Computed from NASA JPL DE421 Sun and Moon positions. Confirm with your local temple or priest for religious observances.
