About Raksha Bandhan
Raksha Bandhan is celebrated on Shravana Purnima. A sister ties a rakhi on her brother's wrist, prays for his wellbeing and he promises protection and a gift. The same full moon is Narali Purnima on the western coast and Avani Avittam for the sacred-thread ceremony.
The rakhi should not be tied during Bhadra (Vishti karana), so the date and muhurat depend on when Bhadra ends. The date shown here accounts for that.
How it is observed
- Rakhi aarti with tilak and sweets.
- Tying the rakhi in the Aparahna window, outside Bhadra.
- Exchanging gifts and blessings.
- Janeu change by Brahmins on the same day.
Dates follow the Hindu lunar calendar (tithi) as seen from Delhi and can differ by a day between regions and panchangs. Computed from NASA JPL DE421 Sun and Moon positions. Confirm with your local temple or priest for religious observances.

Frequently asked questions
When is Raksha Bandhan in 2028?
Raksha Bandhan 2028 falls on Saturday, 5 August 2028. The tithi begins Fri 4 Aug, 11:52 AM IST and ends Sat 5 Aug, 1:40 PM IST (Delhi).
Why does Raksha Bandhan sometimes fall on a different date from Purnima?
Rakhi is avoided during Bhadra. If Bhadra covers the afternoon of the first Purnima day, the ritual moves to after Bhadra ends or to the next morning while Purnima lasts.
Why does the date of Raksha Bandhan change every year?
Hindu festivals follow the lunar calendar, so the date moves against the 365-day calendar by about 11 days a year, then jumps back when an extra (Adhika) month is added.
