About Guru Purnima
Guru Purnima falls on Ashadha Purnima and honours one's teachers and gurus. It is also Vyasa Purnima, remembering sage Vyasa who compiled the Vedas and the Mahabharata, and for Buddhists the day of Buddha's first sermon.
It begins the four-month Chaturmas period, when sadhus settle in one place and teach.
How it is observed
- Guru puja: touching the feet of and thanking teachers.
- Studying or reciting a text such as the Guru Gita.
- Fasting and charity.
- Visiting a guru's ashram or samadhi.
