About Dussehra (Vijayadashami)
Dussehra (Vijayadashami) is the tenth day of the bright half of Ashwin. It marks Rama's victory over Ravana and Durga's victory over Mahishasura, and ends Durga Puja with immersion in the east.
The day is considered auspicious for starting new work and does not need a separate muhurat for many families. The puja is done in Aparahna (afternoon).
How it is observed
- Ravana dahan at dusk.
- Shami and Aparajita puja in the afternoon.
- Shastra and tool worship.
- Sindoor Khela and Durga visarjan in Bengal.
Dates follow the Hindu lunar calendar (tithi) as seen from Delhi and can differ by a day between regions and panchangs. Computed from NASA JPL DE421 Sun and Moon positions. Confirm with your local temple or priest for religious observances.
