About Sharad Purnima
Sharad Purnima, also called Kojagari Purnima or Raas Purnima, is the Ashwin full moon. The Moon is believed to be at its brightest and most nourishing, and Lakshmi is worshipped as the one who asks "who is awake?" (ko jagarti).
Families cook milk-and-rice kheer, keep it in the moonlight overnight and eat it as prasad the next morning.
How it is observed
- Kheer placed under the moon and eaten as prasad.
- Lakshmi puja at night.
- Jagran with bhajans and moonlit gatherings.
- Krishna Raas Leela recitation in Vaishnava traditions.
Dates follow the Hindu lunar calendar (tithi) as seen from Delhi and can differ by a day between regions and panchangs. Computed from NASA JPL DE421 Sun and Moon positions. Confirm with your local temple or priest for religious observances.
