About Govardhan Puja
Govardhan Puja (Annakut) is the day after Diwali, on Kartik Shukla Pratipada. It remembers Krishna lifting Mount Govardhan to protect the villagers from Indra's storm. A hill of food (annakut) is offered at temples and homes.
It is also the new-year day (Bestu Varas) for Gujarati communities.
How it is observed
- Making a Govardhan hill of cow dung or food and circling it.
- Annakut: offering 56 or more dishes to Krishna.
- Cow worship.
- Gujarati new year greetings (Saal Mubarak).
Dates follow the Hindu lunar calendar (tithi) as seen from Delhi and can differ by a day between regions and panchangs. Computed from NASA JPL DE421 Sun and Moon positions. Confirm with your local temple or priest for religious observances.

Frequently asked questions
When is Govardhan Puja in 2030?
Govardhan Puja 2030 falls on Sunday, 27 October 2030. The tithi begins Sun 27 Oct, 1:47 AM IST and ends Sun 27 Oct, 10:37 PM IST (Delhi).
Why is there a gap day after Diwali sometimes?
When Amavasya extends to the next day, Govardhan Puja may be a day later than the calendar day after Diwali because Pratipada is counted by the tithi.
Why does the date of Govardhan Puja change every year?
Hindu festivals follow the lunar calendar, so the date moves against the 365-day calendar by about 11 days a year, then jumps back when an extra (Adhika) month is added.
