About Jagannath Rath Yatra
Jagannath Rath Yatra begins on Ashadha Shukla Dwitiya, when Lords Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra are drawn on enormous chariots from the Puri temple to the Gundicha temple, their aunt's home.
Pulling the ropes of the chariot is believed to carry great merit. Smaller Rath Yatras are held in cities across India and abroad, and the deities return nine days later (Bahuda Yatra).
How it is observed
- Pulling the chariot ropes or watching the procession.
- Offering Mahaprasad (Jagannath bhog).
- Singing bhajans and kirtan.
- Fasting by some devotees.
Dates follow the Hindu lunar calendar (tithi) as seen from Delhi and can differ by a day between regions and panchangs. Computed from NASA JPL DE421 Sun and Moon positions. Confirm with your local temple or priest for religious observances.
