About Vat Purnima
Vat Purnima (Vat Savitri Vrat in Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa) is observed on Jyeshtha Purnima. Married women fast and tie threads around a banyan (vat) tree, praying for the long life of their husbands, in memory of Savitri who won back Satyavan from Yama.
In North India the same vrat falls on Jyeshtha Amavasya, so dates differ by region.
How it is observed
- Fasting through the day.
- Circumambulating the banyan tree seven times with a thread and praying.
- Listening to the Savitri-Satyavan katha.
- Offering fruit, wet gram and rice to the tree.
Dates follow the Hindu lunar calendar (tithi) as seen from Delhi and can differ by a day between regions and panchangs. Computed from NASA JPL DE421 Sun and Moon positions. Confirm with your local temple or priest for religious observances.

Frequently asked questions
When is Vat Purnima in 2030?
Vat Purnima 2030 falls on Saturday, 15 June 2030. The tithi begins Sat 15 Jun, 3:50 AM IST and ends Sun 16 Jun, 12:11 AM IST (Delhi).
Why is there a different Vat Savitri date in North India?
The northern calendar follows the Amavasya-ending month, so the vrat is on Jyeshtha Amavasya, about two weeks before the Purnima observance of western India.
Why does the date of Vat Purnima change every year?
Hindu festivals follow the lunar calendar, so the date moves against the 365-day calendar by about 11 days a year, then jumps back when an extra (Adhika) month is added.
