Birth of the Bhagavad Gita
Gita Jayanti 2026
Sunday, 20 December 2026
Gita Jayanti is on Sunday 20 December 2026, the same day as Mokshada Ekadashi, marking the day Krishna is said to have spoken the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna.
Gita Jayanti marks the day Lord Krishna is said to have delivered the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra. It falls on Margashirsha Shukla Ekadashi, which is also Mokshada Ekadashi.
In 2026 the Ekadashi tithi begins at about 10:10 PM on 19 December and ends at about 8:15 PM on 20 December (Delhi), so both the festival and the fast are on Sunday 20 December. Devotees read the Gita, often a chapter or the whole text, and large gatherings are held at Kurukshetra and in ISKCON and other temples.
